Chemistry

Snapping two building blocks together with a near-perfect reaction

In synthesis, click chemistry names a design philosophy rather than a single reaction: build larger molecules by joining smaller units with a handful of reactions that are high-yielding, wide in scope, stereospecific, and simple to run and purify, so fragments snap together like a buckle. Kolb, Finn and Sharpless's Click chemistry: Diverse chemical function from a few good reactions set out the criteria, with the copper-catalysed azide–alkyne cycloaddition as the exemplar, and the idea now pervades bioconjugation and materials. The referent is a class of modular, reliable bond-forming reactions, unrelated to a one-way pawl or a speech sound apart from the shared word.[1]
