How to read this

Every construct on the map is compared with every other by the meaning of its definitions, and the closest one is surfaced here. The nearest construct to development is differentiation.

Hold this as a prompt, not a verdict. Two constructs sitting close in meaning is a reason to read them side by side and decide for yourself whether they are one idea under two names. It is not proof that they are. Compare the meanings in the Collider.

Economics

A society's material and structural improvement

The sustained, qualitative improvement in a society's material well-being and economic structure, going beyond a simple rise in output to changes in how production is organised. Joseph Schumpeter's 1911 Theorie der wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung coined this meaning, framing development as innovation that disrupts the existing circular flow, and distinguishing it from mere quantitative growth. Walt Rostow's 1960 The Stages of Economic Growth later offered an influential model of the phases a national economy passes through. The referent is the transformation of a whole economy and the living standards it supports, not the growth of an organism's body, the maturing of a person's mind, or any other meaning of the word.[1][2]
