White cells squeeze through the vessel wall

Diapedesis is the step in inflammation where a leukocyte that has rolled along and stuck to the blood-vessel lining passes through that lining to reach the tissue, squeezing between or through the endothelial cells and across the basement membrane. It is the migration stage that follows rolling and firm adhesion in the leukocyte-recruitment cascade and delivers immune cells to a site of infection or injury. Helbing and colleagues' 2017 Endothelial BMP4 regulates leukocyte diapedesis and promotes inflammation examines an endothelial signal that controls this crossing. The referent is the leukocyte's transit across the vessel wall, the construct that turns circulating cells into tissue responders.[1]
