Music

A sustained, unchanging tone under a melody

In music, a drone is a continuous, unchanging note or pair of notes sounded beneath a melody (as in bagpipes, the Indian tanpura, or a hurdy-gurdy), providing a fixed harmonic anchor. The Harvard Dictionary of Music describes the device and the instruments built around it. The referent is a sustained pitch functioning as a tonal ground, identified by its constancy against the moving parts above it. It is a different construct from a male bee or a flying machine that carry the same name.[1]
