How to read this

Every construct on the map is compared with every other by the meaning of its definitions, and the closest one is surfaced here. The nearest construct to editing is cut.

Hold this as a prompt, not a verdict. Two constructs sitting close in meaning is a reason to read them side by side and decide for yourself whether they are one idea under two names. It is not proof that they are. Compare the meanings in the Collider.

Altering a nucleic-acid sequence

In molecular biology, editing is the directed alteration of a nucleic-acid sequence so that it differs from the template that specified it. Benne and colleagues' 1986 report of extra nucleotides in a trypanosome mitochondrial transcript, absent from its gene, introduced the term RNA editing for changes made to a messenger RNA after it is copied, and Jinek and colleagues' 2012 description of a programmable CRISPR-Cas9 enzyme opened the way to gene editing, the targeted rewriting of genomic DNA. The referent is a chemical change to the sequence of RNA or DNA inside a cell, read out by sequencing, and it is unrelated to preparing a written text, cutting film, or a keystroke task in software.[1][2]
