In radiation dosimetry, effective atomic number refers to a single atomic number assigned to a compound or tissue so that its photon interaction behaviour matches that of an element, used to compare dosimeter and tissue response. This meaning comes from Spiers (1946) in The British Journal of Radiology.[1]
