Critical theory

the thesis that rational, scientific reason meant to free people from myth turns into a new form of domination.

The thesis, in twentieth-century critical theory, that the rational and scientific outlook meant to free people from myth and fear turns back into a new form of domination over nature and over people, as reason narrowed to calculation and control becomes an instrument of the very unfreedom it promised to end. Max Horkheimer and Theodor Adorno set out this argument in Dialektik der Aufklärung (Dialectic of Enlightenment), drafted in 1944 and published in 1947, using the word to name not a period or a state of mind but a self-undermining logic within Western reason. Here the term marks a critical diagnosis of modern rationality, argued in philosophy and social theory, and it is distinct both from the historical era it borrows its name from and from the inner awakening sought in Buddhist practice.[1]
