Perception

An approaching object's expanding image

In perception, looming is the rapid expansion of an object's image on the retina as it approaches, a cue the visual system reads as imminent collision and answers defensively. Schiff, Caviness, and Gibson's 1962 Persistent fear responses in rhesus monkeys to the optical stimulus of "looming" showed animals recoil from a symmetrically expanding shadow even when nothing real is approaching. The referent is an optical expansion signalling approach, unrelated to a weaver's frame.[1]

Unit
The rate of optical expansion (and the time-to-contact it implies)
Recovery means
Not applicable
Measured by
By expansion rate, estimated time-to-contact (tau), and defensive-response latency
