Pavement engineering

The coarse roughness that drains water and grips tires

In pavement engineering, macrotexture is the coarse-scale texture of a road surface, with wavelengths of roughly half a millimetre to fifty millimetres set by the size and arrangement of the surface aggregate. Pranjić and colleagues show how macrotexture governs skid resistance, especially at higher speeds, by providing channels for water to escape the tire-road contact and so limiting the loss of grip in the wet. The referent is the deeper component of surface texture, distinct from the fine microtexture of the stone itself, and is quantified by a texture depth that engineers specify to keep roads safe and well-draining.[1]

Unit
Mean texture depth or mean profile depth, in millimetres
Recovery means
Lost texture is restored by resurfacing, grooving, or treatments; traffic polishing reduces it over time rather than renewing it
Measured by
Measured by the volumetric sand-patch method as mean texture depth and by laser profilometry as mean profile depth
