Developmental genetics

A gene that switches on a whole program

In developmental genetics, a master (or master control) gene sits at the top of a regulatory hierarchy: switching it on is enough to trigger an entire developmental program, because it turns on the cascade of downstream genes that build an organ or cell type. Gehring and Ikeo's 1999 Pax 6: mastering eye morphogenesis and eye evolution made the paradigm case, showing that the Pax6 gene can direct the formation of an eye even in the wrong body region. The referent is a controlling regulatory gene defined by its position in a network, not a recording that has been finalised or a certified chess rank.[1]

Unit
A top-level regulatory gene whose activation initiates a developmental program
Recovery means
Not applicable
Measured by
Demonstrated by loss- and gain-of-function experiments in which the gene is necessary and sufficient to trigger the program
