Developmental psychology

A pause to explore before committing to identity

In developmental psychology, moratorium is the identity status in which a young person is actively exploring roles and beliefs but has not yet committed to them, a sanctioned pause in identity formation. Erikson coined the "psychosocial moratorium," and Marcia's 1966 Development and validation of ego-identity status operationalised it as one of four identity statuses defined by crisis and commitment. The referent is a developmental state of open exploration, assessed by interview or questionnaire, and it has nothing to do with a fishing ban or a debt-payment pause beyond the shared meaning of a deliberate delay.[1][2]
