Mycology / plant biology

A nutrient-trading partnership of fungus and plant root

A mycorrhiza is the widespread symbiosis between a fungus and a plant root in which the fungus extends its hyphae into the soil and delivers phosphorus, nitrogen, and water to the plant in exchange for the sugars the plant fixes by photosynthesis. The partnership comes in distinct forms (arbuscular mycorrhizas that penetrate root cells and ectomycorrhizas that sheathe the root), and the great majority of land plants depend on one. Smith and Read's Mycorrhizal symbiosis is the standard account of its structure and function. The referent is the root–fungus mutualism and the nutrient exchange across it.[1]
