Sleep science

A short daytime sleep

A nap is a short bout of daytime sleep, and sleep research treats it as functional rather than idle. Mednick, Nakayama, and Stickgold's 2003 Sleep-dependent learning: A nap is as good as a night showed that a daytime nap can consolidate perceptual learning about as well as a full night's sleep. The referent is a brief sleep episode and its restorative and memory effects, sharing only the spelling with a fabric's raised surface.[1]

Unit
The duration and sleep stages of the daytime sleep bout
Recovery means
A nap itself restores alertness and consolidates learning; recovery here is the performance regained after the sleep
Measured by
By nap duration, sleep-stage content (polysomnography), and post-nap performance
