In sports medicine, the overtraining syndrome is a long-lasting decline in performance, accompanied by persistent fatigue and mood or physiological disturbance, that results from an imbalance between training and recovery and does not resolve with a short rest. It sits at the far end of a continuum: a short, planned overload causes functional overreaching with rebound gains, a deeper overload causes nonfunctional overreaching with stalled performance, and the syndrome itself can take months to recover from. The 2013 joint consensus statement of the European College of Sport Science and the American College of Sports Medicine, led by Meeusen, defined the continuum and the diagnosis by exclusion of other causes. The referent is a maladaptive state of chronic underrecovery, identified by prolonged performance loss once other illness is ruled out.[1]
