Physics

A body's state and mass in its own motionless frame

In physics, rest refers to the state of a body that is not moving relative to a chosen frame, and the properties defined in that frame: the rest frame is the one travelling with the body, and its rest mass (invariant mass) is the mass measured there, carrying a rest energy given by Einstein's 1905 Ist die Trägheit eines Körpers von seinem Energieinhalt abhängig?, which showed that a body at rest still possesses energy equal to its mass times the speed of light squared. The referent is the motionless reference condition and the frame-independent quantities tied to it, and it has nothing to do with a cook letting meat sit or a notated silence beyond the shared word.[1]

Unit
The invariant mass and energy of a body measured in its own rest frame
Recovery means
Not applicable
Measured by
Determined from a particle's energy and momentum via the invariant-mass relation, independent of the observer's frame
