Statistics

Estimate by substituting the empirical distribution

In statistics a plug-in estimator estimates a feature of a distribution by plugging in the empirical distribution for the unknown true one: the sample mean for the population mean, the empirical CDF for the CDF, and so on. Wasserman frames the plug-in principle as the default route from a functional of the distribution to its estimate, underpinning the bootstrap. The referent is an estimation strategy, sharing only the word with a lock core or a volcanic plug.[1]

Unit
An estimate formed by evaluating a functional at the empirical distribution
Recovery means
Not applicable
Measured by
Assessed by the bias, variance, and consistency of the plug-in statistic for its target functional
