A tourbillon mounts the whole escapement (balance, hairspring, lever and escape wheel) inside a cage that rotates slowly, usually once a minute, driven by the train. Because gravity pulls differently on a balance held in each vertical position, a fixed escapement gains in some positions and loses in others; continuously turning the cage makes the escapement pass through all those positions so the errors average out rather than accumulate. Daniels's Watchmaking describes the construction and the positional error it is meant to correct. The referent is a rotating-escapement device for averaging the gravity-dependent rate errors of a portable timekeeper.[1]
