Rock mechanics

a model of an excavation roof in jointed rock acting as a shallow arch of blocks carrying load by compression.

In rock mechanics, the voussoir beam is a model for the roof of an excavation in horizontally jointed or stratified rock: because the joints cannot carry tension, the broken layer behaves not as a solid beam but as a shallow arch of blocks that transmits load by compression, exactly like an arch of masonry voussoirs. Sofianos's 1996 analysis and design of a hard-rock voussoir-beam roof worked out when such a self-supporting arch of rock remains stable against snap-through and crushing. It is the same compression-only arching construct as the masonry arch, transposed to fractured rock and used to judge whether an unsupported span will hold.[1]

Unit
The stable span and thickness of the arching rock layer over an opening
Recovery means
Not applicable
Measured by
Evaluated by the voussoir-beam model's predicted mid-span and abutment stresses, buckling (snap-through) limit, and factor of safety for a given span and layer thickness
