Apiculture

A dance that encodes direction and distance

The waggle dance is the figure-eight movement a honey bee forager performs on the comb to recruit nestmates to a distant resource: the angle of the straight waggle run relative to vertical encodes the direction to the goal relative to the sun, and the duration of the waggle encodes the distance. von Frisch's The Dance Language and Orientation of Bees decoded this correspondence, and Riley and colleagues' The flight paths of honeybees recruited by the waggle dance later tracked recruited bees by harmonic radar to confirm they fly the vector the dance specifies. The referent is a symbolic recruitment communication on the comb, decoded by reading dance angle and waggle duration against food-source location.[1][2]

Unit

Recovery means
Not applicable
Measured by
Decoded from waggle-run angle (direction) and waggle duration (distance); recruitment success tracked by follower flights
