Plant phenology

A synchronized burst of new leaves

In plant phenology, a flush (leaf flush) is a discrete, often synchronised burst of new leaf production, as when deciduous trees push out fresh foliage at the start of a growing season. Murali and Sukumar related the timing of leaf flushing in a tropical dry forest to herbivory, finding young flushing leaves especially vulnerable to insect damage. The referent is an episode of coordinated new growth, unrelated to clearing a cache or a reddening of the skin.[1]
