In ceramics, glazing is the application and firing of a glassy coating onto a clay body, sealing its surface and giving colour and gloss; the glaze is a glass formulated to melt and bond at the firing temperature. Earl and Ahmed (2008), in the Ceramic Engineering and Science Proceedings, characterize how a glaze melts as it is fired. Here glazing is a fused glass coating on pottery, not sheets of glass set into a building.[1]
In building engineering, glazing is the glass component of a facade or window and the systems that hold it, governing daylight, heat transfer, and weather resistance of the envelope. Memari (2013), in Curtain Wall Systems, reviews developments in curtain-wall and glazing systems. Here glazing is the glass of a building envelope, not a fired coating on pottery.[2]
