The missing fundamental is the phenomenon in which a listener perceives the pitch of a complex tone at its fundamental frequency even when that frequency carries no energy, because the pattern of upper harmonics alone specifies the periodicity. Licklider's 1951 A duplex theory of pitch perception proposed that the auditory system extracts this pitch from the temporal regularity of the waveform, and Schouten, Ritsma, and Cardozo's 1962 Pitch of the residue characterized the residue pitch carried by the unresolved high harmonics. The referent is a pitch percept determined by periodicity rather than by spectral energy at the fundamental, probed by removing or shifting harmonics and measuring the pitch heard.[1][2]
