In physical oceanography, a neap tide is the smallest tidal range in the fortnightly cycle, occurring near the Moon's first and last quarters when the Sun and Moon pull at right angles and their tide-raising effects partly cancel, so high waters are lower and low waters higher than average. Neaps are the opposite extreme to spring tides, which fall near new and full Moon; the two alternate as the lunar and solar semidiurnal constituents drift in and out of phase. Doodson's 1921 The harmonic development of the tide-generating potential provides the constituent decomposition whose beating produces exactly this spring–neap modulation. The referent is the minimum-range phase of the tide, measured by the reduced difference between successive high and low waters.[1]
