Electronics

A manually adjustable variable resistor

In electronics a pot is the shop name for a potentiometer, a three-terminal resistor with a sliding or rotating wiper that taps off an adjustable fraction of the voltage across it, used for volume controls, trimming, and setting reference levels. Horowitz and Hill's The art of electronics describes how it serves as an adjustable voltage divider or a variable resistance. The referent is a tunable circuit element measured in ohms and set by wiper position, which has nothing in common with a card-game stake or a clay vessel beyond the clipped word.[1]

Unit
The resistance or voltage fraction set by the wiper position
Recovery means
Not applicable
Measured by
Specified by total resistance in ohms, taper, and the output fraction at a given wiper position
