How to read this

Every construct on the map is compared with every other by the meaning of its definitions, and the closest one is surfaced here. The nearest construct to remission is relief.

Hold this as a prompt, not a verdict. Two constructs sitting close in meaning is a reason to read them side by side and decide for yourself whether they are one idea under two names. It is not proof that they are. Compare the meanings in the Collider.

Medicine and oncology

A disease abating in a patient

In medicine, remission is a period during which the signs and symptoms of a disease, above all cancer, are reduced or have disappeared, whether partly (partial remission) or entirely (complete remission). Döhner and colleagues' 2017 Diagnosis and management of AML in adults, the European LeukemiaNet recommendations, set out the standard criteria for complete remission in acute myeloid leukaemia and stressed that it marks the disappearance of detectable disease, not a cure, because the illness can still return. The referent is a measured clinical state of a body and its disease, tracked over time, not the cancellation of a debt or penalty by a court, nor the forgiveness of sin studied by scholars of religion.[1]

Unit
One patient's disease state, graded as complete or partial remission, or none
Recovery means
The disease may recur after remission, so patients are watched for relapse and, in some cancers, called cured only after a long spell without it
Measured by
Assessed by clinical examination, blood counts and marrow, imaging, and molecular tests of residual disease against agreed response criteria
