Rowing sport science

How many strokes the crew takes each minute

In rowing sport science the stroke rate (or rating) is the cadence of the stroke cycle, the number of complete strokes a crew takes per minute, and it trades off against the force and length of each stroke in setting the power applied to the boat. Held, Siebert, and Donath's 2020 Changes in mechanical power output in rowing by varying stroke rate and gearing showed how power output shifts as rate and rig gearing change, and Holt and colleagues' 2021 study related boat acceleration and performance to stroke rate and power output together. The referent is the temporal frequency of the stroke, measured in strokes per minute, through which crews regulate intensity and pace during a race.[1][2]

Unit
Strokes per minute over the race or piece
Recovery means
Not applicable
Measured by
Counted as strokes per minute from seat, oar-angle, or boat-instrumentation data, and read against power output, boat velocity, and the drive-to-recovery ratio
