Immunology

A repeat dose that lifts immune memory

In immunology, a booster is a later dose of a vaccine or antigen given after the primary course to re-stimulate memory cells and raise protection to a higher and more durable level than the first exposure produced. Glenny and Südmersen's 1921 Notes on the production of immunity to diphtheria toxin documented this amplified secondary response, in which a repeat injection drives a faster and larger rise in antibody. The referent is a dose that exploits immunological memory to reinforce an existing response, a different construct from a stage of a launch vehicle that shares only the meaning of giving an extra push.[1]

Unit
The rise in antibody level and memory response produced by a repeat dose
Recovery means
Not applicable
Measured by
Measured by the fold increase in specific antibody after the repeat dose and by the speed and magnitude of the recall response
