In popular music, house is a style of electronic dance music that emerged in early-1980s Chicago, built on a steady four-on-the-floor kick drum, drum machines and synthesizers, and a tempo around 120–130 beats per minute, and named for the Warehouse club where it took shape. Rietveld’s This Is Our House: House Music, Cultural Spaces, and Technologies traces the genre, its production technologies, and the dancefloor culture around it. The referent is a musical genre and scene, unrelated to a theatre’s seating or a gambling operator beyond sharing the word.[1]
