Rhetoric

Saying the fitting thing at the opportune moment

In rhetoric, kairos is the opportune moment and fitting occasion for speech: the right thing said at the right time, in the right measure, to the right audience. A central value for the Greek sophists and treated across the classical rhetorical tradition, kairos governs timeliness and appropriateness as opposed to timeless rule; the essays collected in Sipiora and Baumlin's Rhetoric and Kairos trace its history and its revival in modern composition theory. The referent is the situational timing and decorum of persuasion, a resource the rhetor seizes, and it is a distinct construct from the theological kairos of a divinely appointed time, sharing the Greek word for the critical moment.[1][2]
