In solar physics a prominence is a cloud of relatively cool, dense plasma suspended above the photosphere and held against gravity by coronal magnetic fields; seen in projection against the bright disk the same structure appears dark and is called a filament (see Moore in The Encyclopedia of Astronomy and Astrophysics; Jenkins and Keppens on the prominence/filament paradox). The referent is a magnetized plasma structure, with nothing in common but the word with the linguistic meaning of perceptual salience.[1][2]
In phonetics and phonology prominence is the degree to which a syllable stands out from its neighbors, the perceptual basis of stress and pitch accent, cued chiefly by duration, pitch and intensity, as in Mo's study of duration and intensity as cues to naive listeners' prominence. The referent is a graded property of speech perception. It shares only the word 'prominence' with the Sun's suspended plasma structure.[3]
