Hydrology

A catchment's runoff response to one unit of rain

The unit hydrograph is the direct-runoff hydrograph produced by one unit (for example 1 cm or 1 inch) of effective rainfall falling uniformly over a catchment in a specified duration; it treats the basin as a linear, time-invariant system so that the runoff from any storm can be built by scaling and superposing unit responses. Dooge's 1959 A general theory of the unit hydrograph placed the method on a rigorous systems-theory footing, framing the catchment as a linear operator acting on the rainfall input. The referent is a catchment's characteristic linear response function to a unit depth of excess rainfall.[1]
