In organic chemistry, the workup is the set of operations performed after a reaction, quenching, washing, extraction, drying, and concentration, that separates the desired product from reagents, catalysts, and solvents. Xu and Hammond (2014) describe in Organic Letters a rigid solvent-extraction device that speeds this step, treating workup as a defined, optimizable stage of a synthesis. Here workup is the post-reaction isolation procedure in a lab, not the diagnostic evaluation of a patient.[1]
In clinical medicine, a workup is the structured sequence of history, examination, imaging, and laboratory tests undertaken to evaluate a presenting problem and reach a diagnosis, as in the diagnostic evaluation and workup set out in the surgical text Nerve Surgery (2015). The term frames diagnosis as an ordered investigative process rather than a single test. Here workup is the clinical path to a diagnosis, not the chemical isolation of a reaction product.[2]
