A critical band is the range of frequencies within which the auditory system integrates energy as if through a single filter, so that tones or noise falling inside one band interact - masking one another and summing in loudness - while components in separate bands are resolved independently. Fletcher's 1940 Auditory patterns inferred these bands from masking experiments and proposed that the cochlea acts as a bank of overlapping band-pass filters. Zwicker's 1961 Subdivision of the audible frequency range into critical bands tabulated twenty-four such bands spanning hearing, later the basis of the Bark scale. The referent is the effective bandwidth of auditory frequency analysis, measured through masking and loudness-summation experiments.[1][2]
