In paper conservation, foxing is the scattered reddish-brown or yellow-brown spotting that disfigures aged paper in old books, prints, and documents. Conservation scientists still debate its cause, with the leading accounts attributing it to fungal growth, to the oxidation of trace iron and other metal impurities in the sheet, or to some interaction of the two under humid storage. Gallo and Hey's 1988 Foxing—a new approach and Choi's 2007 Foxing on paper: A literature review survey the competing biological and chemical explanations and the treatments tried against them. The referent is a localized discoloration defect of the paper substrate itself, graded by spot density and color, and it has nothing to do with the reinforcing rubber strip of the same name on a shoe.[1][2]
