Polymer physics

A network that stretches far and springs back

In polymer physics rubber is an elastomer: a network of long, lightly cross-linked chains that can be stretched to several times its length and recoil, with its springiness coming not from stretching bonds but from the chains' tendency to return to their most disordered, high-entropy state. Treloar's The physics of rubber elasticity is the classic account of how that entropic, statistical picture predicts the stress a rubber returns under strain. The referent is a material and its mechanical behaviour, characterised by modulus and extensibility, unrelated to a card game or a pitching slab beyond the name.[1]

Unit
The elastic response of a cross-linked polymer network
Recovery means
The network recoils to its disordered rest state when the stretching load is released
Measured by
Characterised by stress–strain curves, elastic modulus, and extensibility at break
