One name. Different field. Different construct. One map.

Hold this as a prompt, not a verdict. Two constructs sitting close in meaning is a reason to read them side by side and decide for yourself whether they are one idea under two names. It is not proof that they are. Compare the meanings in the Collider.

A litigant's obligation to keep documents and data that may be relevant to a dispute from the moment litigation is reasonably anticipated, not from the moment it is filed. Zubulake IV stated the duty for electronic records in 2003: once a party reasonably anticipates litigation it must suspend its routine deletion and put a litigation hold in place. The 2015 amendment to Rule 37(e) supplied the consequences, measuring a party against reasonable steps rather than perfection, and reserving adverse inferences for intent to deprive. The Sedona Conference's 2019 commentary on legal holds set out the guidelines practitioners follow: a written hold, identified custodians, periodic reminders, and a documented release. Preservation here is a duty owed to a court and an adversary, triggered by anticipation, bounded by relevance and proportionality, and enforced by sanction.[1][2][3]
The set of activities that keep digital information accessible and interpretable after the hardware, software, and formats that created it are gone. Rothenberg warned in 1995 that digital documents are more fragile than paper because their bits are meaningless without a program to read them, and proposed emulation as the answer. Hedstrom called the problem a time bomb for digital libraries in 1997 and set the research agenda: migration, emulation, and metadata. The OAIS reference model, ISO 14721, fixed the vocabulary in 2003: a submission, archival, and dissemination package, a designated community, and the representation information that community needs to understand the bits. Preservation here is an ongoing institutional process whose success is measured decades out, and whose object is intelligibility rather than the physical carrier.[4][5][6]
The prevention of spoilage and pathogen growth in food by controlling the conditions microorganisms need. Leistner named the modern approach hurdle technology and summarised it in 2000: temperature, water activity, acidity, redox potential, preservatives, and competing flora are each a hurdle, and a combination of mild hurdles can achieve stability that no single severe treatment achieves without damaging quality. The theory rests on the homeostasis of microorganisms, which exhaust themselves overcoming several stresses at once. Preservation here is a microbiological outcome engineered into a product, measured by shelf life and by counts, and it has nothing to keep except the food's own condition.[7]
Keeping wild nature untouched for its own sake, as distinct from managing it for sustained human use. The American split dates from the fight over Hetch Hetchy: Muir wanted the valley left alone, Pinchot wanted its water used wisely, and Callicott's 1990 essay named the two positions the preservationist and resource-conservationist ethics and argued that Leopold's land ethic had superseded both. Soulé's 1985 manifesto for conservation biology set the discipline's normative postulates (diversity, complexity, and evolution are good) and defined it as a crisis discipline that acts before it is certain. Preservation here is one ethical stance within a field that mostly does not share it, and the word marks the side that would remove people rather than manage them.[8][9]
