In radio propagation, the skip distance is the shortest ground range at which a high-frequency signal, bent back toward Earth by the ionosphere, returns to the surface; between the transmitter and that point lies a skip zone, a band of silence the skywave leaps over, so an operator can hear a far station while a nearer one is inaudible. Davies's Ionospheric radio sets out how the critical frequency, the maximum usable frequency, and the reflecting layer's height fix the skip distance, and how it swings with time of day, season, and the solar cycle. The referent is the geometry of ionospheric hop propagation, and it has nothing to do with omitting an exon or bypassing a layer beyond the shared image of leaping over something in between.[1]
In molecular genetics, exon skipping is a splicing outcome in which the spliceosome leaves one or more exons out of the mature messenger RNA, so the protein is built without that segment. Aartsma-Rus and van Ommen's Antisense-mediated exon skipping reviews how synthetic antisense oligonucleotides can deliberately mask a splice site and force a chosen exon to be skipped, for example to restore a disrupted reading frame in Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The referent is the inclusion-or-omission of an exon during RNA processing, a molecular editing step unrelated to a radio dead zone or a neural-network bypass except for the common idea of skipping a piece.[2]
In computer science, a skip list is a randomized ordered data structure that keeps a sorted linked list searchable in logarithmic expected time by adding layers of express pointers that skip over many elements at once; each node is promoted to higher levels by repeated coin flips, so the structure stays balanced on average without any explicit rebalancing logic. Pugh's Skip lists: A probabilistic alternative to balanced trees introduced the structure and its probabilistic analysis. The referent is a probabilistic dictionary whose performance guarantees are expectations over the random level assignment, a formal object with no connection to ionospheric propagation or RNA splicing.[3]
In deep learning, a skip (or shortcut) connection carries a layer's input forward and adds it to the output of a later layer, bypassing the transformation in between, so the block only has to learn a residual correction rather than an entire remapping and gradients get a direct path back through the network. He and colleagues' Deep residual learning for image recognition introduced identity shortcut connections and the residual block, which made networks of hundreds of layers trainable. The referent is an architectural bypass between non-adjacent layers, sharing only the word with a radio skip zone, a skipped exon, or a skip list's express pointers.[4]
